6/28/2008My friend and fellow SharePoint MVP, Andrew Connell, will be delivering his WCM Developer Class in Irvine CA on August 4th. You can read more about the course specifics here; and you can register here.
With the popularity of SharePoint Training, it is hard to weed through who deliveres what and which training is good or bad. And believe me, there is a lot of training being delivered that I would not recommend. I am publishing this because Andrew Connell is one of the best when it comes to SharePoint Web Content Management technologies. If you need to get your development staff trained in the area of expertise, this is the only class they will need to attend. 6/27/2008
I wanted to let everyone know that we are now delivering our Mastering SharePoint Workshop online! Its the same workshop we have been delivering in a classroom setting in the past but now you can attend from the comforts of your home or work.
Our next workshop will be delivered on 7/8/2008.

Well, I am a bit sad to say that I have left Maui; the trip was absolutely amazing. As announced in the June K2 Networker, Mixon Consulting will be delivering training for the new K2 blackpoint product. This is the training materials I have been working on, while in Maui, but couldn't talk about it before K2 announced the product beta release yesterday. The new K2 blackpoint product takes all of the features found in K2 blackpearl that are specific to SharePoint integration (WSS and MOSS) and deliver it all at a fraction of the cost. If you are interested in a product demo, licensing or have any other questions, contact me at Bob@MixonConsulting.com.
It is fantastic to be at Tech Ed here in Orlando. This is the first time I have been able to see all of my MVP friends since my accident last year. I feels great to be back in the circuit!
I first stopped in the vendor area to see old friends, make a few new friends and see where the different products have come. It was good to see Brad Smith; he now has a company named Black Blade Associates, Inc. and they have a very cool product named SharePoint Document Section Manager; which allows multiple people to edit a single Word document. I haven't seen everything the product can do yet, I plan to do so this week, but this is something the industry has needed for quite some time now. As I learn more, I will keep you up to date.
I then stopped by to see my friends at FarPoint. Not sure if you know who these guys are but they have been around for years. In fact, I used their FarPoint Spread product back in the 90's; it was a very high-end custom control that had most of the features of Excel. They have taken their Spread product and created a SharePoint enabled Web Part. I did see a demo of it and the UI abilities are very feature rich. If you are looking for a way to display SharePoint List and Library information in a highly customizable way, I recommend taking a look at this product. I did make a promise to them; once I am done writing my new SharePoint and K2 training materials, I would thoroughly evaluate the product. Once I have done that, I will tell you more! In the meantime, take a look at it here.
I have plenty more products to take a look at this week so stay tuned and I will share what I find…
In the afternoon, I took a stroll over to the Microsoft SharePoint area and had a chance to see Andrew Connell giving away signed copies of his new book; of course I had to get a signed copy for my bookshelf! Head over to my SharePoint Bookshelf and pickup a copy of SharePoint 2007 Web Content Management!
And one last plug here. Don't forget, I will be in Dallas next week delivering my Mastering SharePoint workshop. It’s a week packed full of "how to build real business solutions using SharePoint Products and Technologies"! Register Today! 5/29/2008
My wife, Jeanette, and I took a 1 hour helecopter flight over the island of Maui. The trip was breathtaking.

Aloha!
Yesterday I delivered a 3 hour session at the Hawaii SharePoint User Group. From the time my wife, Jeanette, and I arrived to the time we left, the experience was incredible.
The Hawaii SharePoint User Group was held at eWorld Enterprise Solutions in Honolulu Hawaii. I had the opportunity to meet Tom Yau (President/CEO), Stephen Mizokawa (Business Development Manager), and Wen He. The welcome I received from everyone at eWorld was amazing. There is something to be said, and learned, about the way they work with people. I couldn't help but think; if they use the same warm and inviting approach with their customers, they will be very successful in all of their endeavors.
If that wasn't enough, we were then greeted by Chris Bayot, with Synergy, who is also the User Group Sponsor. Before my session, she greeted me with a traditional Hawaiian gift which darn-near brought tears to my eyes.
Needless to say, the whole day was absolutely amazing! I thank everyone from eWorld and Synergy for all they did to make us feel so welcome.
The session I delivered was Content Classification and Categorization in Microsoft SharePoint; we had somewhere around 30 to 35 people in attendance. 3 1/2 hours on how and why content needs to be classified, how and why you need to build a corporate taxonomy and how to build it in SharePoint. I hope everyone enjoyed the session as much as I did. Below you will find the presentation I delivered...

So, if you ever have a chance to visit the Hawaii SharePoint User Group (which I highly recommend you make a point to do so) make sure and tell them Aloha from me!

Today is Monday, May 26th, and my wife and I are on day 5 in Maui. Seems the universal word of each day is “wow”. Today we were out exploring the island beauty and came across sea turtles; in the wild. This is the first time I have ever seen sea turtles in the wild so it was very cool for me.
The first three days we stayed in Kihei then moved north to Lahaina; this is where we will be staying until next Sunday. The view here out of our window is fabulous.
So am I getting any work done while here? Yes, I have been able to work early mornings and late evenings. I am working on training materials that will add to our Mastering SharePoint series.
Aloha! 5/21/2008
I will be in Dallas the week of June 9th, 2008 to deliver our Mastering SharePoint: 5-Days to a Successful MOSS Deployment workshop. If you are interested in learning how to create and maintain a corporate taxonomy and architect information in such a way as to solve the top 3 critical success factors for all Document Management, Knowledge Management and Intranet solutions, come and join us!
If you don't plan on attending the class and live in/near the Dallas area, drop me a note so we can get together for dinner or coffee!
Yep... as crazy as that sounds, I am headed to Maui and I will be working (and playing).
Tomorrow my wife, Jeanette, and I are headed to Maui for 11 days. I am working on new SharePoint/Workflow/BPM training materials and can't think of a better place to write! So, even though I will be in Maui, I will still be getting some work done... :)
While I am there, I am speaking at the Hawaii SharePoint User Group. The session topic is:
3 Factors that Drive the Success of Every Document/Knowledge Management Solution
To successfully implement a Knowledge Management, Document Management or Corporate Intranet, we must carefully and deliberately craft our information assets. Building a corporate taxonomy, classification and categorization schemes is a must. In this session, you will:
- Discover the three critical success factors of a successful implementation and how to make sure that you integrate them in every solution.
- Answer once and for all the proverbial user question of “Where do I put this stuff?” and the ever popular, “Why can’t I find anything that’s meaningful?”.
- Unleash the power and need for multi navigational structures, when to use them, how to use them and why they make such a huge difference.
- Understand content classification and categorization and how do you use it to create context for aggregation and search.
Explore, Ask Questions, Learn!
The User Group is being held at: Davies Pacific Center 841 Bishop Street, Suite 1830 Wednesday, May 28th from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
For more information, please see this article.
On Wednesday, May 21, 2008, I will be speaking at the San Diego SharePoint User Group. The focus of my sessions will be SharePoint Workflow!
For more information about this event, including times and location, please see this article.
I wanted to thank everyone who attended my two sessions at the Portals and Collaboration Conference. I would also like to thank the Institute for International Research for inviting me to speak; I hope to have the opportunity again in the future...
There were a lot of great questions; its always nice to have a crowd keep the sessions very interactive.
As promised, you can download a copy of my presentations:
